FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions About Remote Online Notary (RON)

How is remote online notary different from traditional in-person notary?

Remote Online Notarization (RON) is a digital alternative to traditional notarization, allowing you to notarize documents online via a secure video session. This process eliminates the need for in-person meetings, enabling notarization from anywhere with an internet connection. RON uses advanced security measures, including digital signatures and identity verification, to ensure safety. It's a fast, convenient, and secure solution for notarizations in the digital age.

Does a signer 'personally appear "in the presence of an online notary public?

To ensure a successful online notary session, you’ll need a device with a camera and a web browser, such as a computer or smartphone, to enable real-time communication. A stable internet connection is essential, so make sure no security features or firewalls block the video and audio. Lastly, have a valid government-issued photo ID ready for identity verification, such as a state driver’s license or passport.

Is online notary legally recognized?

Most U.S. states now allow notaries to perform Remote Online Notarization (RON), offering widespread access to notarial services. If a local notary is unavailable, you can use a notary from another state where RON is authorized, thanks to interstate recognition of notarial acts. However, it’s important to confirm with the document recipient or consult legal experts to ensure RON is suitable for your specific needs, ensuring the validity and acceptance of your notarized documents.

Online notarization allows you to legally meet with a commissioned notary via video, offering a more secure and convenient alternative to in-person notarization.

NOTE: While online notarizations do not provide a traditional wet ink signature, the document is electronically stamped to indicate it was notarized remotely. We advise that you consult with the relevant state authority, such as the applicable county clerk’s office to confirm whether a Remote Online Notarization (RON) document will be accepted for your specific purpose.

If you have a legal requirement that mandates a notary from your specific state and we do not have an available notary in that state, our service may not be applicable. In such cases, we recommend seeking a local notary to ensure compliance with the specific requirements.
